Norton to Floor This Afternoon on Rapid New Developments for D.C. Budget

April 19, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will lead a Special Order on the House floor today at 3:30 p.m. to discuss new progress toward achieving budget autonomy for the District of Columbia. Earlier this week, Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) announced he was working on a budget autonomy bill, and a national poll was released showing that more than 7 in 10 Democrats and Republicans support budget autonomy for the District. In November 2011, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has jurisdiction over D.C., announced a proposal to give D.C. budget autonomy, which was similar to Norton's own budget autonomy bill. In February, the President's fiscal year 2013 budget indicated that the administration would work with Congress to give the District budget autonomy. Since then, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell (R) have both announced support for budget autonomy.
