Norton to Focus on Progress in Fight Against HIV/AIDS at AIDS Walk Saturday
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will make remarks then join thousands of D.C.-area residents participating in the Whitman-Walker Clinic's 26th annual AIDS Walk on Saturday, October 27, 2012, starting at Freedom Plaza (13th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW) at 8:15 a.m.
"The International AIDS Conference came to the District in July and found a city turning around one of the worst HIV/AIDS infection and death rates in the world," Norton said. "Taking part in every AIDS Walk since coming to Congress, I speak each year of walking this preventable disease out of our city. We will walk Saturday in a city where new AIDS cases are down 32%, where no children have been born with HIV since 2009, and where there has been a 72% decrease in the number of newly diagnosed HIV cases attributable to injection drug use. Republicans have tried and failed to re-impose the deadly rider banning D.C. from spending its own local funds on needle-exchange programs, ever since we got it removed in 2008. I will gladly walk on Saturday, buoyed by the city's undeniable progress and the prospect of an AIDS-free city."
