Norton to Give Keynote Address at AFL-CIO’s “Race and the Labor Movement Town Hall,” Tonight

June 29, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) this evening will give the keynote address at a "Race and the Labor Movement Town Hall," hosted by the AFL-CIO and the NAACP-District of Columbia chapter, at 6:00 p.m., at the AFL-CIO headquarters (815 16th St. NW). Norton's address and the subsequent panel and town hall discussion will focus on the intersection between the labor and civil rights movements and their shared goals.

"Progress and social change do not come about naturally or accidentally," Norton said. "They require action and continuing struggle across the spectrum of American society. The joint activism of the labor and civil rights movements demonstrated this success in the 1960s and accomplished the great civil rights statutes. Now, these allies must take on the issues of today. I am grateful to the AFL-CIO and the NAACP-D.C. Chapter for hosting tonight's town hall to launch a national discussion around race and the labor movement."
