Norton to Give Readings from the Nation’s History at Washington National Cathedral’s Independence Day Service, Sunday

July 2, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will offer guesting readings from the nation’s history at the Washington National Cathedral’s Independence Day service on Sunday, July 3, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. The Service to Remember the Vision of Freedom includes readings from the nation’s history along with music and prayers.

“At the Independence Day Service at our National Cathedral, I will have the honor of offering readings, including one from Sojourner Truth’s ‘I am Pleading for My People,’” Norton said. “Her words for ‘a poor downtrodden race’ compare with no Americans today. Yet, I will be thinking of my own constituents in the nation’s capital when I read, ‘But while your kindest sympathies to foreign lands do roam, I ask you to remember your own oppressed at home.’”
