Norton to Give Thanks to Area Military Families and Focus on Helping the Needy, During Thanksgiving Week
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will begin Thanksgiving this week with events to honor military families and to help provide food, health care and clothing to D.C. families in need. The day before Thanksgiving, on Wednesday, November 27, Norton will speak at the 14th Annual Safeway Feast of Sharing at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (801 Mount Vernon Pl. NW) at 11:30 a.m. The event will not only provide a free turkey dinner to approximately 5,000 residents, but will also offer health screenings, clothing donations, a career fair, and information on the transition from welfare to work. The day after Thanksgiving, on Friday, November 29, Norton will speak at the Third Annual Military Thanksgiving at Arena Stage at Mead Center (1101 6th St. SW), which begins at 5:30 p.m. The event takes place in gratitude to servicemembers and their families.
"In focusing on helping the needy and by honoring our wounded warriors, servicemembers, and military families, we are reminded that Thanksgiving needs to be shared," said Norton. "Particularly considering huge cuts to food stamps and other vital assistance, Thanksgiving this year provides an opportunity to remember not just what we ourselves are thankful for, but also of our obligation to find ways to help others. Particularly at Thanksgiving, we in the District are thankful for the sacrifices of servicemembers and their families, who have had to increasingly endure repeat tours of duty, but return to our nation's capital without the basic freedoms they have helped secure for citizens of other countries."
