Norton to Help Break Ground on Transition Center for Disabled and Special Needs Children

June 28, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and The HSC Foundation will celebrate the groundbreaking of the National Youth Transition Center, Monday, June 28 at 10:00 a.m. Norton and the President and CEO of The HSC Foundation, Thomas W. Chapman, will offer remarks.

"Finally, we will have a Youth Center to fill the large void in services for ill and special needs children, their families, teachers, and the community during the important transition from an illness or disability to a full life," said Norton. "Now there will be a place where much-needed coordinated services, such as, mentoring and job training will be available."

The HSC Foundation is dedicated to improving access to services for individuals who face social and health care barriers due to disability, chronic illness, or other circumstances that present unique needs. The National Youth Center will be housed in a new seven-story building located in NW Washington, DC and will offer programs to help young people and veterans with disabilities build paths to independence and to the world of work. The center will also serve as a hub for regional and national disability organizations, policymakers, government agencies, and disability advocates.

Congresswoman Norton requested $3,000,000 from the Economic Development Initiatives Account in the FY2011 Transportation Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill for the construction of this center. Construction on the Youth Center is expected to be completed in 2012.
