April 16, 2012

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton will honor the accomplishments of Reverend Jerry A. Moore, Jr. at the 10am service, and after the service, she will help unveil a new plaza named after him at the streets surrounding the church on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church at 4606 16th St. NW.

While serving the church as pastor for 50 years, Rev. Moore was elected as an At-Large Council Member in D.C. in 1974, in the first election held after Home Rule was established. He served on the City Council for a decade, and was later nominated by President George H.W. Bush to serve as ambassador to the kingdom of Lesotho.

"Rev. Jerry A. Moore excelled in political life and the ministry at the same time, bringing excellence and integrity to both," Norton said.

Rev. Moore was first appointed to the D.C. Council by President Richard Nixon in 1969.
