Norton to Highlight Disproportionate Impact of the Federal Shutdown on D.C. at Three Events, This Week
WASHINGTON, D.C.—To get the attention of the President and Congress, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will showcase the disproportionately deep impact of the Trump shutdown on District of Columbia residents and the District's local economy at three events this week.
"The Trump shutdown is causing such widespread pain in the District that we must treat it as an emergency," Norton said. "For more than a month, federal and contract workers and their families have been held hostage by the White House and Senate Republicans. The harm is quickly radiating to D.C. businesses and small businesses, such as restaurants. We must take the lead in showing the nation the real-life hardship the Trump shutdown is producing in the nation's capital and increasingly across the country."
Today at 2:00 p.m., Norton will visit the Capital Area Food Bank (4900 Puerto Rico Ave. NW) with Mayor Muriel Bowser to call for the end of the shutdown and thank the many local businesses and nonprofits that are assisting federal and contract workers who are hurting because of the shutdown.
Tomorrow, January 23, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Norton will visit the World Central Kitchen's #ChefsForFeds Resource Center (701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW), which is providing meals and other resources to federal workers and their families. Norton will meet with volunteers and speak with federal workers.
On Thursday, January 24, at 6:00 p.m., Norton will host an Emergency Town Hall at One Judiciary Square (441 4th St. NW) to hear stories from federal employees, federal contract workers, local D.C. business owners and other residents about the impact of the Trump shutdown.
