Norton to Hold a Community Conversation with Ward 5 Democrats to Explain Full Year Local Funding for D.C. and Other Issues
WASHINGTON, DC – With less than 20 days of Congress scheduled to be in session before the end of the year, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today will hold a Norton in Your Neighborhood with the Ward 5 Democrats at the Michigan Park Christian Church (1600 Taylor Street NE), from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In the context of the end of the year and what comes next, Norton will brief residents on congressional issues affecting them, including the provision she won, in the bill signed to reopen the federal government, that allows D.C. to spend its local funds for the full fiscal year while the federal government must function on a three-month continuing resolution. She will also address her new role as the Democratic leader of the Highways and Transit Subcommittee and how it will benefit the District, unusually positive progress on D.C. budget autonomy, the Affordable Care Act, and the connectivity between the Ward 5 Democrats and the D.C. Democratic Party with the national Democratic Party as the 2014 mid-term and 2016 Presidential elections approach. Above all, Norton seeks feedback from her constituents at Norton in Your Neighborhood sessions.
"The Republican do-nothing Congress shut down the government, but, with hard work, the city got a historic first when the government reopened – it can spend its local funds for a full fiscal year, while the federal government is stuck in a three-month temporary fix," said Norton. "I will also update D.C. residents on progress toward budget autonomy and upcoming end-of-the-year congressional issues at our community conversation this evening."
