Norton to Hold Community Meeting on the Virginia Avenue Tunnel Project
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will hold a community meeting on the issues associated with the Virginia Avenue Tunnel Project, on Saturday, November 23, at 2:00 p.m., at the Arthur Capper Senior Center (900 5th St SE), with the surrounding community, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), the D.C. Department of Transportation (DDOT) and CSX, the company that owns the tunnel and has proposed the reconstruction project. The community surrounding the project site, especially the proposed trench on Virginia Avenue, has raised issues and concerns in advance of the release of the Environmental Impact Statement. The meeting, therefore, will serve as a forum for the community to be updated on the most recent developments with the proposed project, and to voice their concerns and ask questions.
On November 8, Norton’s staff received a briefing from CSX on the status of hazardous materials (hazmat) that travel through the District on CSX trains, emergency measures in place in the event of a hazmat incident, and on the reconstruction plan for the Virginia Avenue Tunnel, including for the proposed trench on Virginia Avenue. Norton released details of the briefing and called the upcoming meeting to allow the community to be brought up to date and to air their concerns.
