Norton to Hold Discussion with Congressman John Lewis and Civil Rights Leader Julian Bond for Black History Month Event on Today
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will moderate a Black History Month event with Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) and Civil Rights leader Julian Bond on today, February 27, 2012, at 8:30 p.m. at Busboys and Poets (2021 14th St., NW). In their student days, Lewis, Bond and Norton met as young civil rights workers in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). At the event, Congresswoman Norton will moderate a discussion about "then, since, and now as the nation recognizes Black History Month."
"This will be a special session for me," Norton said. "On the one hand, it is personal because John, Julian and I shared some of the same experiences at a pivotal moment in our country's history. However, we will not focus only on our own days in the Civil Rights movement, we will look for links to the here and now, such as Occupy and the women's movement, and the effects those movements have had on American life."
