Norton to Host Community Discussion with LGBT Group GLOV to Discuss ENDA, DOMA

October 22, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a "Norton in Your Neighborhood" community conversation with Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV) to discuss the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), the impact of recent rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and other congressional matters tomorrow, October 23, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The D.C. Center for the LGBT Community, 2000 14th Street NW.

Norton, former chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, will be providing a congressional update on LGBT rights, including the Department of Labor's new directive that updates guidance on sex discrimination laws by including protections for claims of discrimination based on transgender status and gender identity for the first time in the United States. Norton will also speak about the most recent favorable U.S. Supreme Court decisions, namely, the decision to decline to review federal appellate court rulings striking down same-sex marriage bans.

Norton has been a longtime advocate for fair treatment of LGBT residents in the District of Columbia, from defending against workplace discrimination and fighting for married same-sex couples' right to receive federal benefits for their spouses.

The official flyer for this event can be found here.

The Congresswoman encourages all D.C. community and civic organizations, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, and other groups to sponsor a Norton in Your Neighborhood. For more information, visit https://norton.house.gov or call Norton's district office at (202) 408-9041.
