Norton to Host D.C. Statehood Press Conference with Mayor Bowser, Chairman Mendelson, Friday
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a press conference with District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson to announce the introduction of H.R. 51, her bill to make the District the 51st state, on Friday, January 4, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., in 2154 Rayburn House Office Building (Committee on Oversight and Reform). Norton will introduce the bill with a record number of original cosponsors in the House. In the 115th Congress, Norton secured a record number of total cosponsors in the House (181), more than 90 percent of House Democrats, and in the Senate (30).
“As we begin a new Congress, I will introduce my first bill of the session, H.R. 51, to make D.C. the 51st state,” Norton said. “We worked with our allies to secure historic support this past Congress, and, with Democrats in control, even greater support for D.C. statehood is already developing. I look forward to working with D.C. officials and our residents as we press for a House floor vote on statehood.”
