Norton to Host Highways and Transit Roundtable on Mobility on Demand, Tuesday

June 24, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), chair of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, announced that the subcommittee will host a roundtable on Mobility on Demand, or MOD, this Tuesday, June 25th at 2:00 p.m.

MOD is an innovative approach to transportation focused on new systems. These systems couple real-time data with travelers and their transit options to help find the most efficient way to get travelers where they need to go, including using public transit, shuttle services, ride-sharing, and alternative modes of transportation like bikes and scooters. Many questions still exist surrounding planning and regulation, as well as ways to encourage coordination.

"These MOD systems are so new they weren't even covered in our surface transportation bill four years ago," Norton said. "By prioritizing these integrated systems, we can reduce congestion, speed up travel time, reduce our carbon footprint, and expand our economy. I am proud that the District of Columbia, for example, has a thriving alternative transportation economy that I intend to support at the federal level. I look forward to a vibrant discussion on ways Congress can help these new modes of transportation cooperate and succeed."

Witnesses at the roundtable will include Michael Hayes, Director of Government Affairs for the Consumer Technology Association, which advocates for alternative modes of transportation such as Uber and Lyft; Brad Miller, CEO of Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, which recently launched a ride-hailing service called Direct Connect in Florida; Tim McHugh, CIO of TriMet, which has been successful in connecting and integrating various transit options in Portland, OR; Greg Regan, Secretary-Treasurer of Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO, which supports labor and workers; Faye Dastgheib, Senior Policy Analyst at the District of Columbia Department of Transportation, who will give the city's perspective on MOD coordination; and Scott Bogren, Executive Director of Community Transportation Association of America, which advocates for affordable and reliable transportation for all consumers.
