Norton to Host Press Conference with National Advocacy Groups Announcing Their Support for D.C. Statehood
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will be joined by some of the largest national advocacy groups in the country this Tuesday, July 2nd, to announce their endorsement of Norton's D.C. statehood bill, H.R. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, and discuss the action they will take to help secure passage of the bill. Ahead of the first House hearing on District of Columbia statehood in 26 years on July 24th, Norton will host these groups in the Capitol to discuss the ongoing work on nationalizing the fight for equal representation and self-government for D.C residents.
"In the last six months, we've built more momentum for D.C. statehood than at any point in our 218 years as the nation's capital," Norton said. "These national groups have impressive track records in helping to enact legislation. Their help will both strengthen and widen our reach to the millions of Americans who do not yet know that our residents do not have the same rights they do."
Norton's statehood bill has 213 voting cosponsors in the House. The Senate version of the bill, introduced by Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), has 33 cosponsors.
