Norton to Host Town Hall Meeting with NPS, Capital Parks East Community to Discuss New Developments

October 3, 2014

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that she will host a Capital Parks East Town Hall meeting to discuss the federal parkland in the Ward 7 and 8 communities. The town hall, on Tuesday, October 14, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at THEARC, 1901 Mississippi Avenue SE, will feature discussion with and by the community on the future of the federally owned parklands and the four historic parks in Wards 7 and 8. National Park Service (NPS) Superintendent of National Capital Parks-East, Gopaul Noojibail; the chair of the Shepherd Parkway Committee, Nathan Harrington; and the executive director of Washington Parks & People, Steve Coleman, will answer questions and suggest improvements to Fort Dupont Park, Anacostia Park, Shepherd Parkway, Kenilworth Park and the other NPS grounds in Wards 7 and 8. Scott Kratz, the director of the 11th Street Bridge Park Project, will show designs of the Bridge Park from the four finalists. Norton, who hosted a similar town hall this past May to hear suggestions from District residents about how to improve NPS parks in D.C., is encouraging residents to email their questions and suggestions to NortonEvents@mail.house.gov with "Capital Parks East Suggestions" in the subject line.

"This is the first town hall to focus on the copious NPS parkland east of the Anacostia River," Norton said. "We want to make this valuable resource more beautiful, accessible and enjoyable. Along with public-private partnerships, we hope to find other cost-effective solutions to improve our parks east of the river. I encourage residents to email their questions and suggestions to NortonEvents@mail.house.gov with ‘Capital Parks East Suggestions' in the subject line."
