Norton to Introduce D.C. Seniors to African American Civil War Museum at Senior Legislative Day, Today
WASHINGTON, DC – Senior Legislative Day, hosted by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW), in conjunction with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), at the African American Civil War Museum (1925 Vermont Ave. NW), today, June 24, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., will feature an all-seniors talent show, a tour of the museum and a briefing on current congressional issues affecting seniors, including proposed Republican changes to Medicare and Medicaid, and the proposed changes to cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security and other programs (Chained CPI). Because the venue's maximum capacity of 130 has been reached, Norton will visit senior centers across the District for video viewings of the day's events.
The senior talent show will feature Evelyn Crawford of SOME Senior Center, who will sing a jazz song, "Summertime," and Miss Senior D.C., who will dance and sing to a Zumba tune. Mercy Morganfield, AARP D.C. Director, will deliver remarks. Frank Smith, founder and director of the African American Civil War Museum, will round out the day with remarks before a tour of the museum.
"Our well-informed seniors always want to hear it straight on the issues that face them – the latest on Medicare and Medicaid, as well as chained CPI," said Norton. "We will also showcase talent from their own generation and tour the unique African American Civil War Museum and the nation's only monument dedicated to the 180,000 African Americans who fought in the Civil War."
