WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will join the American Postal Workers Union, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Postal Mail Handlers Union, the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, and the National Association of Postal Supervisors at the "Save America's Postal Service" rally today outside the National Press Building, 529 14th Street NW, in support of H.R. 1351, the United States Postal Service Pension Obligation Recalculation and Restoration Act of 2011.

Norton, a member of the Subcommittee on Federal Workforce, U.S. Postal Service and Labor Policy, said, "House Republicans have manufactured a crisis to try to force the Postal Service, a corporation with billions of dollars in assets, into receivership. There are scores of ways to revive the Postal Service without tossing out union contracts and tying the hands of the Postal Service, instead, it should be allowed to function as the private corporation the federal government insists it is."

Last week, at a subcommittee markup, Norton voted against H.R. 2309, the Postal Reform Act of 2011, the House Republican postal reform bill that she said failed to allow the flexibility and innovation that are needed to help the Postal Service operate like a private entity.
