Norton to Join Pro-Choice Caucus Co-Chairs at Press Conference Tomorrow Prior to Markup of Abortion Bill

January 14, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Tomorrow, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a member of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, will speak at a press conference in advance of the markup of H.R. 7. Norton will speak to the extremism of the abortion bill and will focus on a provision of the bill that permanently prohibits the District of Columbia from spending its local funds on abortion services for low-income women, and defines the D.C. government as part of the federal government for the purposes of abortion. Last week, Republicans denied Norton the traditional courtesy of testifying at a hearing on the bill, even though it contains a provision uniquely targeting her district. Norton will join Pro-Choice Caucus co-chairs Congresswomen Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Diana DeGette (D-CO), as well as Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, and other members of the caucus and the Judiciary Committee, at the press conference. The press conference will take place in the hallway outside the House Judiciary Committee hearing room, where the markup will take place immediately following the press conference. In addition to the D.C.-only provision, H.R. 7 would, among other things, prohibit the use of federal funds for abortion services and interfere with women's access to abortion coverage in the private insurance marketplace.
