Norton to Join the Congressional Turkish Caucus
October 29, 2010
WASHINGTON, DC -- The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said today that the Congresswoman will join the Congressional Turkish Caucus in the spirit of the Turkey and Armenia protocols, entered into last year to encourage reconciliation between the two nations. Norton is also a member of the Congressional Armenian Caucus. The two nations have long been at odds concerning charges by Armenia of genocide during World War One. Both countries are U.S. allies. Turkey plays a major role in accommodating American troops in the Middle East. Norton said, "The American invasion of Iraq further unsettled the most perilous region in the world. We need to encourage Turkey and Armenia to approve the protocols they made last year, which constituted a major breakthrough. As a member of both caucuses, I will do my best to encourage the reconciliation that the region needs, our country wants, and the rest of the world encourages."
