WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will be the keynote speaker at the dedication ceremony for the Major General David F. Wherley Jr. and the Mrs. Ann Wherley Family Readiness Center today, September 12, at 10:00 a.m. at the District of Columbia National Guard Armory, 2001 East Capitol Street. Major General Wherley and his wife were victims in the 2009 Metro crash that claimed the life of two Maryland residents and seven District residents.

Norton said, "General Wherley and I developed a close working relationship, especially during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with the conversion of the D.C. National Guard from weekend warriors to Army troops performing the duties of enlisted soldiers in the field of battle. His wife, Ann, was a visible partner in his work. Major General Wherley poured his heart into his command and into our city. He worked tirelessly for tuition for Guard members, as well as for kids in camps and in after school activities conducted by the D.C. National Guard members. Naming the Family Readiness Center for this model couple is a most fitting way to strengthen family bonds."

Norton also named her bill to authorize the D.C. National Guard Tuition Assistance program in honor of Major General David Wherley Jr.
