November 28, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With Senate debate now underway on the fiscal year 2013 Defense Authorization bill, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will head to the House floor to lead a half-hour special order today, November 28, 2012,around 4:00 p.m. calling on Senators to include a provision in the bill that would require the armed services to display the D.C. flag and the flags of the territories whenever the flags of the 50 states are displayed. The House-passed version of the bill contains the provision.

Norton first drew attention to this issue at a Veterans Day press conference, featuring D.C. resident and fire investigator Tomi Rucker, the mother of Seaman Jonathan Rucker, who wrote the Congresswoman about the D.C. flag not being displayed at her son's graduation from boot camp at Naval Station Great Lakes while the state flags of the other graduates were displayed.
