Norton to March in Annual Capital Pride Parade with Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, Saturday
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will march in the 39th annual Capital Pride Parade with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, as she has every year since being elected to Congress, tomorrow, Saturday, June 7, 2014, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at 22nd and P Streets NW. The parade, which travels one and a half miles, from near Dupont Circle to Logan Circle, is expected to draw over 100,000 spectators. Norton will march with the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club.
"It is always a blast to march in the Pride Parade, but it becomes more and more fulfilling as our country increasingly expands LGBT rights," said Norton. "Make no mistake, though; there is much still to be gone in Congress. High on my agenda is the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, for equal job opportunity, amending Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which I administered as chair of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. We are not only marching to celebrate achievement, we are also marching to demand progress."
Norton, a strong advocate for LGBT rights, kicked off Memorial Day weekend this year by delivering remarks at the annual DC Black Pride Festival to LGBT people from around the country and the world. Later in the week, Norton spoke at the annual DC Latino Pride celebration at the Human Rights Campaign Equity Forum.
