Norton to March in Cherry Blossom Parade, D.C. Emancipation Day Parade Tomorrow
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will march in the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade and the D.C. Emancipation Day Parade tomorrow. Norton has walked in every Cherry Blossom Parade since being elected to Congress and will again march with the Girl Scouts of the National Capital Region. The Cherry Blossom Festival is a world-renown festival attracting thousands of tourists to the District.
Norton will then march in the D.C. Emancipation Day Parade, which celebrates when slaves in the nation's capital were freed nine months before the Emancipation Proclamation. Despite this celebration, nearly 157 years later, D.C. residents are not fully free and equal to other American citizens. Congress can overturn local D.C. laws and collects federal taxes without representation, despite D.C. residents serving and sacrificing their lives in every U.S. war.
