Norton to Present John Lewis and Anita Bonds with the ‘Eleanor Holmes Norton’ Award at D.C. Black Pride Awards Reception, Tonight
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will present Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) and District of Columbia Councilmember Anita Bonds with the "Eleanor Holmes Norton Award" at the 28th annual D.C. Black Pride Awards Reception tonight, Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at The Park at 14th (920 14th St. NW). Norton and Lewis worked together as members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). The "Eleanor Holmes Norton Award" is presented to elected officials who have provided leadership in standing up for equal rights for the LGBT community. The awards reception kicks off a multi-day D.C. Black Pride festival, which features community town halls, educational workshops, social events, and performances by musicians, dancers and other artists.
"What an honor to have our own LGBT community name an award for me and then permit me to present that award to my good friend from SNCC and now my congressional colleague, John Lewis, as well as to Councilmember Anita Bonds," Norton said. "I have fought proudly alongside both of tonight's honorees for the rights of D.C.'s LGBT residents."
