Norton to Serve as Guest Preacher at National Cathedral Service Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Sunday

January 15, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will serve as a guest preacher for a service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Sunday, January 17, 2016, at 11:15 a.m., at Washington National Cathedral (3101 Wisconsin Ave. NW). Norton, an Episcopalian who was christened at St. George’s Episcopal Church shortly after she was born in the District, was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during the height of the Civil Rights Movement and, as a student, worked with Bayard Rustin on the staff of the 1963 March on Washington.

“Each January when we come together to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his great issues—non-violence, poverty amidst plenty, the universality of equal rights—continue with the currency of today,” Norton said. “I am honored by the invitation of the Washington National Cathedral to serve as guest preacher for Sunday’s service. The service provides an opportunity to reflect on how Dr. King’s prophetic life continues to resonate in the great issues of our time.”
