Washington, DC--Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will sponsor a briefing on January 12, 2005 to encourage the development of the NOMA (North of Massachusetts Avenue) area, near the recently opened New York Avenue Metro station. The event will be held at the new XM Radio headquarters, near the intersection of New York Avenue and Florida Avenue, NE, and will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Norton got federal funds for the New York Avenue Metro station, and later got the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to re-locate its headquarters, now being constructed nearby, through her work on the House Subcommittee on Economic Development. She believes the long neglected, centrally located NOMA neighborhood is ripe for development. “Many agencies need space at reasonable rates,” Norton said. “NOMA, with its central location near the New York Avenue gateway and new Metro station, is a perfect fit, and can keep federal agencies and jobs in D.C.” She said that federal agencies bring stability and services to D.C. neighborhoods. Hugh Panero, President and CEO of XM Radio, Donald Williams, Regional Administrator of GSA, and officials from two federal agencies in the area will give remarks aimed at making federal officials understand how accessible and reasonable the area is as a place to do business.

Norton, who is a member of the subcommittee with jurisdiction over the General Services Administration (GSA), has worked with the agency to invite federal agencies, as well as NOMA building owners, and those who are building in the area to the event. To date, 11 federal agencies have committed to attending the briefing.
