Norton to Speak at Memorial Service for Former EEOC Chair Jacqueline Berrien, Today

January 13, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), the first woman to chair the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), will offer remarks at a memorial service for former EEOC Chair Jacqueline Berrien today, Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., at the EEOC Headquarters (131 M St. NE). Ms. Berrien’s husband, Peter Williams, among others, will also offer remarks. Ms. Berrien passed away at the age of 53 in November 2015. Berrien, like Norton, was a native Washingtonian, and was President Obama’s first appointment as chair of the EEOC, serving from 2010-2014.

“As a former EEOC Chair serving in Congress, I was able to forge a special working relationship with Jacqueline Berrien, whose vision and dedication helped bring the EEOC into the 21st century,” Norton said. “She was tragically taken from us far too soon, and she is missed by her family, friends, coworkers, the many Americans who benefited from her accomplished life, and me.”
