Norton to Speak at Press Conference on Republican Senators Holding up African American Judicial Nominees
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus's Judicial Nominations Working Group, will speak at a CBC press conference tomorrow, Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., to call attention to the pattern of Republican Senators holding up African American judicial nominees and the importance of diversity in the judicial branch. Norton will join CBC Chair Marcia Fudge (D-IL), Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL), a member of the CBC Judicial Nominations Working Group, and two Florida members – Reps. Corrine Brown (D-FL) and Frederica Wilson (D-FL) – who represent districts that are home to African American judicial nominees currently being held up. Thirty percent of currently pending judicial nominees in the Senate are African American. In addition to Norton and Hastings, the members of the CBC Judicial Nominations Working Group are Reps. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) and Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO).
