Norton to Speak at Rally as Pressure Mounts for Congressional Action on Highway Trust Fund

June 10, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Ranking Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, will speak the 3rd annual Rally for Roads to highlight the fiscal cliff facing the Highway Trust Fund (HTF) on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at 8:30 a.m., at Union Square (the area just below the west side of the Capitol, near the Botanic Gardens). Norton will join highway users, construction professionals, material and equipment suppliers, and labor representatives at the rally to call for congressional action before the HTF becomes insolvent by mid-July. HTF insolvency could mean the delay of more than 100,000 roadway projects and 5,600 transit projects, as well as costing the economy as many as 700,000 construction jobs in the next year.

"The House has produced almost no jobs since Republicans took over in 2010," said Norton. "If Congress does not act by August, it will be directly responsible for withdrawing hundreds of thousands of jobs from the economy by allowing the Highway Trust Fund to become bankrupt. No one can doubt that we have now reached a moment of emergency. The Rally for Roads will shine a light on the urgency for action."
