Norton to Speak at Rededication of Maine Lobsterman Statue on the Wharf, Today

September 25, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at the rededication of the Maine Lobsterman statue along the Wharf, today, September 25th at 1:00 pm. In 2012, Norton's bill clarifying the legal status of the Wharf property was enacted to allow the District of Columbia to move forward with a major redevelopment project that includes 2.5 million square feet of hotels, office space, retail and residences, as well as increased maritime activity. The federal government transferred the Southwest Waterfront land to the District in the early 1960s, before D.C. had home rule, but, even though the District owned the land, restrictions on the land had resulted in its underuse. The District, which is constrained by height restrictions in the capital, always needs more land. Norton has worked no only to make full use of this land, but also to preserve the Titanic Memorial, which the District has worked with the National Park Service to protect, and the Maine Lobsterman Memorial, which Norton worked with Senator Susan M. Collins (R-ME) to also protect in the bill.

"The Maine Lobsterman was a cherished part of the Wharf, which is still under construction," Norton said. "We in the District go to great lengths to preserve our history as we rebuild parts of our city. Since my bill passed to develop the Wharf, it has been transformed with much more to come. Our thanks to Maine Senator Susan Collins for her efforts and her partnership at today's rededication."
