Norton to Speak at Ribbon Cutting at The Yards, Today
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Arris at The Yards, which is being developed from her bill, the Southeast Federal Center Public-Private Development Act of 2000, today, Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at 1331 4th St. SE. The Norton bill allowed private-sector development of federal land for the first time, with Forest City Washington, Inc. serving as the master developer. Norton wrote the unique legislation, launching a new direction in federal land use, to benefit the District of Columbia as well as the federal government. Norton will be joined by Mayor Muriel Bowser, U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Denise Turner Roth, and Forest City President Deborah Ratner Salzberg.
“Considering the fabulous restaurants, the Harris Teeter, the two water parks, and other amenities, and the thousands of residents already living in The Yards, it may be hard to believe that The Yards is only in its first phase,” Norton said. “But The Yards is not just a site. It is a new community that will grow over the next 15 to 20 years. We are particularly proud of Deborah Ratner Salzberg, one of the few women in the country engaged in such a massive development—and she is showing the country how to do it.”
