Norton to Speak at Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony of Southeast D.C. Health Center

October 22, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will give opening remarks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony of a new health center today, October 22, around 12:30 p.m. at Community Connections, 801 Pennsylvania Avenue SE. The new health center, a result of a partnership between Unity Health Care and Community Connections, called "Healthy Connections," will focus on providing mental health services and substance abuse treatment, as well as on closing the gap in primary and behavioral health care services. Norton praised the two organizations for coming together to promote a healthier city.

"The Affordable Care Act gave those with weak insurance policies considerably greater access to mental health services," Norton said. "However, particularly for low-income residents, there are gaps in coverage that urgently need to be filled. Unity and Community Connections are filling a prescription the city badly needs."

Unity Health Care is D.C.'s largest nonprofit health and social services organizations, serving more than 93,000 residents annually. Community Connections, also a nonprofit, is the D.C. Department of Behavioral Health's largest provider partner.
