Norton to Speak at ‘Veterans for D.C. Statehood’ Rally, Receive Award, Monday
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at a rally sponsored by Veterans for D.C. Statehood this Monday, November 11th, at 2:00 p.m. on Veterans Day in Freedom Plaza. Norton will accept the “DC Statehood Freedom Award” for her work fighting for D.C. equality.
“Residents of this place we now call the nation’s capital fought in the Revolutionary War that created the United States of America,” Norton said. “Yet for 218 years, our veterans have lived as unequal citizens in their nation’s capital, despite fighting in every U.S. war, bringing equal rights throughout the world. On Veterans Day, we remember that no Americans have given more to their country or received less than veterans from the District of Columbia.”
Norton’s D.C. statehood bill (H.R. 51) has 223 cosponsors in the House. The companion bill in the Senate (S. 631), introduced by Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), has 35 Senate cosponsors.
