Norton to Speak at Vigil Prior to One-Year Anniversary of Tragic Newtown Shooting

December 12, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, during a week of remembrance of the Newtown, Connecticut shooting on December 14, 2012, almost a year ago, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at a vigil in remembrance of the tragic shooting and for all victims of gun violence throughout the country, including the more than 30,000 lives lost each year to gun violence, at 3:45 p.m., at the Washington National Cathedral (3101 Wisconsin Ave NW). The vigil is organized by the Newtown Foundation and the Newtown Action Alliance.

"After the unspeakable gun violence in Newtown, the nation's capital should be the foremost place to remember that tragic day, and thousands of Americans and their families whose lives are lost or shattered by gun violence each year, because it is here that the remedy is found in the U.S. Congress," said Norton. "The Newtown children and their teachers have become the indelible faces of the epidemic of gun violence in our country. Through them, this week, we must pledge to continue to work to pass gun safety laws and legislation to expand mental health treatment and background checks, and to prevent those who are more likely to commit gun violence from having guns, and take the necessary action the people overwhelmingly have said is needed."
