Norton to Speak, Receive Award at Brother Help Thyself, Tomorrow

January 24, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak tomorrow at Brother Help Thyself at the DC Eagle (3701 Benning Road NE) at 6:15 p.m. where she will receive an award. Brother Help Thyself was founded in 1978 by four gay motorcycle clubs and is one of the first organizations in the United States to provide funding for LGBTQ health, cultural, and social services. Since then, they have raised more than $3.5 million for 196 groups in our community. Each year the organization raises funds, partners with grantees on fundraisers and other events, acts as a clearinghouse for donated goods and services, and serves as an information resource to the LGBTQ community.

"I am particularly grateful to Brother Help Thyself for its extraordinary service to our residents," Norton said. "We recognize the importance of Brother Help Thyself in the District, where the AIDS epidemic is the legacy of the ban on the use of needle exchange until I was finally able to get Congress to remove it."
