Norton to Speak Today at The Wharf “Bottoming Out” Event, the First Visible Result of Her SW Waterfront Legislation
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at a "bottoming out" event for The Wharf, marking the end of site excavation for the first phase of the 24-acre mixed-use waterfront community, today, Thursday, July 16, 2015, at 11:30 a.m. at 690 Water Street SW. Norton's bill, the Southwest Waterfront Redevelopment Act, which was signed into law in 2012, made The Wharf possible by eliminating federal legal restrictions on the use of property at the Southwest Waterfront and allowed the District of Columbia to move forward with a major redevelopment project that will develop one full mile of shoreline and include 3.2-million-square-feet of hotel, office, retail, and residential space, as well as clear the way for increased maritime activity there. The project is being developed by Hoffman–Madison Waterfront.
"This milestone for The Wharf three years after our Southwest Waterfront bill was signed into law may be called a bottoming out party, but it marks the rising of a brand new neighborhood in the District," Norton said. "The Wharf comes with thousands of permanent jobs for D.C. residents and $47 million in tax revenue for the city every year."
