Norton to Support Bipartisan, Comprehensive Medical Marijuana Legislation at Press Conference, Today
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will join Americans for Safe Access and medical marijuana advocates from the District of Columbia and across the nation at a Capitol Hill press conference today, Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at 11:30 a.m., at the U.S. Capitol Grounds Demonstration Area 10. The press conference will focus on garnering support for the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion, and Respect States (CARERS) Act (H.R. 1583), which Norton has cosponsored. The CARERS Act would protect the 40 states with medical marijuana programs from federal interference.
“D.C. residents unfortunately know all too well what it is like for Congress and the federal government to interfere with a jurisdiction’s local laws,” Norton said. “For more than a decade, Congress blocked our medical marijuana program. The CARERS Act is bipartisan, common-sense legislation that would allow states to responsibly carry out their local medical marijuana programs without federal interference, ensuring that patients, including our veterans, have access to medical marijuana.”
