Norton to Tout Historic Momentum for D.C. Statehood at ‘Breaking Through Power’ Conference, Tomorrow
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will give a special address, entitled, “Getting Statehood Through Congress—Strategy And Resources,” at the “Breaking Through Power” conference, hosted by Ralph Nader, tomorrow, Wednesday, September 27, 2016, at 1:20 p.m., at DAR Constitution Hall (1776 D St NW). Norton will headline a series of speeches at the conference tomorrow dedicated to statehood for the District of Columbia.
“This week’s ‘Breaking Through Power’ conference is about how to overcome institutional and political barriers to enact meaningful change that will enhance our democracy and promote social and environmental justice in the United States,” Norton said. “There is no better example of that challenge than the 215-year-old struggle of D.C. residents to break through the traditional congressional and political barriers for full equality. Our residents will take the first step to break the chokehold by going to the polls to vote on D.C. statehood and a new constitution for the proposed state of New Columbia this fall. I thank Ralph Nader, a longtime D.C. statehood supporter, for championing our cause.”
