Norton to Unveil Today Renaming of D.C.'s Historic Post Office in Honor of Dr. Dorothy I. Height

February 22, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today will hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. to commemorate the renaming of the historic U.S. Post Office located at 2 Massachusetts Avenue NE in honor of Dr. Dorothy I. Height. Andrea Rhone, WUSA9 television journalist, will emcee the renaming ceremony, which follows the signing of Norton's bill to rename the post office for Dr. Height, the first federal building in the nation's capital named in honor of an African American woman. Mayor Vincent Gray, former U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights Wade Henderson, National Council of Negro Women Vice-Chair Dr. Thelma Daley, Washington Postmaster Gerald Roane, and Dr. Bernard Randolph, nephew of Dr. Height, will deliver brief remarks.

"Dorothy Height, who became an iconic messenger for social justice, lived in the District of Columbia for years," said Norton. "I know that residents and visitors alike will applaud the naming of a major federal building in the nation's capital in honor of one of America's great women."

Known as the "Godmother of the Civil Rights Movement," Dr. Height's work was associated with countless efforts for social justice, particularly women's equality and racial justice. She has been recognized with every significant national honor, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and the NAACP Spingarn Medal. Height also served as president of the National Council of Negro Women for forty years, and served as national president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for eleven years.
