Norton Urges Democrats to Highlight Agenda of Wins

July 27, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C – As the House departed for August recess, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the following statement urging Democrats to bring their winning agenda in the House Majority into sharp focus at home where it counts.

"The focus on impeachment, or on the president's daily antics, distracts from pressing issues and suppresses discussion of Democratic accomplishments.

"Democrats have passed bills to raise the minimum wage, not only to lift millions of Americans out of poverty, but also to bump up wages for millions more. Are Americans even aware of this and other priorities passed by the House? We have passed bills to lower prescription drug prices, make health care more affordable, and protect millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions. We have passed bills to fight climate change, reduce gun violence by closing background check loopholes, ensure women are paid equally with men for the same work, and passed a sweeping civil rights bill that would extend protections to LGBTQ Americans facing discrimination.

"During this recess, our House Members should be shouting this record from the rooftops – the only way to embarrass the Senate into doing their job, as we have done ours. Senate Republicans are refusing to take up dozens of bills, as Trump tries to drown out the good news from the House.

"There is no doubt that President Trump is unfit to hold the office of the president. The best way to make that point is to contrast our success in only our first months in the majority with his."
