Norton Urges Residents to Give Thanks by Giving More

November 24, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC - As the District's unemployment this year reached its highest in 30 years at 11.9 percent, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), urging residents to "give more than usual" to the less fortunate, today will join the Marine Toys for Toys for Tots kick-off at Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Ave., NE, at 10 a.m. and tomorrow will participate in the 10th Annual Safeway Feast of Sharing at the Washington Convention Center, Hall D, 11:30 a.m. Planning also is underway for the Congresswoman's Holiday Party to be held on Capitol Hill on Dec. 17.

The Congresswoman kicked off the Thanksgiving season at the Annual Help the Homeless Walk on the National Mall Saturday and on Monday packed Thanksgiving bags and helped distribute them with turkeys with Bread for the City. She participated in WHUR's Annual Food2Feed Drive last week, urging people to donate food and cash donations.

"Many of us give more during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, but the ‘Great Recession,' has hit so many more of us so much harder that we must dig deeper even more than usual," Norton said. "If we didn't understand before today, everyone with a job and a home knows that she has much to be thankful for. The way to give thanks this year is to give to others."
