Norton Very Busy During Congressional Recess

WASHINGTON, DC -- Although the U.S. House of Representatives is in recess, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's (D-DC) schedule is so full that she will not be able to take a recess or a vacation. Today, Norton will make appearances with two cabinet members, speak at the National Night Out anti-crime initiative, and will start the day by giving the latest analysis on the last week of session on NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt at 10:00 a.m.

Norton, who has been a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security since its formation after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, will appear with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano and D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier at DHS's "See Something, Say Something" campaign event at 2:30 p.m. at the Metropolitan Police Department Headquarters. Norton said, "The new broader DHS initiative is critically important to security and public safety because there will never be enough local police and federal agents to safeguard security breaches especially here in the nation's capital, which remains a prime target."

She will also appear with Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan along with a hundred pre-K through third-graders from C.W. Harris Elementary School during the department's "Let's Read, Let's Move" Summer Series. The initiative to motivate kids to remain active during the summer months coincides with Norton's National Dance Day that celebrated fitness and dance education on the National Mall last weekend, and drew thousands of participants.
