Norton Wants Visible Reinforcements to Keep July 4th Celebration Safe

June 30, 2011

Washington, DC--Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today called on all federal and D.C. law enforcement agencies to work together, with added personnel, to keep residents and July 4th visitors secure during the first large event in the nation's capital since U.S. Special Forces took down Osama bin Laden. She said that she was pleased that there have been no credible reported threats, but that visible enforcements would help warn away possible threats from al-Qaeda or other terrorists seeking revenge or drawn to large crowds here. Norton said, "The Department of Homeland Security, local and national intelligence and police officials, and the military have kept the nation safe, often preventing attacks. I have every reason to believe that the city and the celebration will be safe this holiday weekend." Bin Laden's documents warned that al-Qaeda had contemplated an attack on Independence Day and on mass transit.
