Norton Welcomes Activists to D.C. Statehood Congressional Briefing Hosted by DC Vote and CBC
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) welcomed residents to Capitol Hill today for a congressional briefing held by DC Vote in conjunction with the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) on efforts to enact Norton's bill to make the District of Columbia the 51st state. Last week, Norton secured four additional cosponsors for her Washington, D.C. Admission Act (H.R. 1291), surpassing a supermajority cosponsorship (146) of the House Democratic Caucus.
"I am grateful to DC Vote for its consistent activism with our statehood allies for equality of citizenship for our nearly 700,000 residents," Norton said. "Although we recognize the political challenges we currently face, now is the time to build support in the city, the nation and in the Congress so we are prepared with ready-made support when the time is ripe. With the House and Senate in play, DC Vote and the CBC see the urgency in getting ahead of events."
