Norton's Bill to Place Two District Statues in Capitol Scheduled for Markup in House Administration Committee, Wednesday

July 13, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's (D-DC) bill, H.R. 5493, to permit two statues honoring the residents of the District of Columbia to be placed in the U.S. Capitol, will go before the Committee on House Administration for markup on Wednesday, July 14, in 1310 Longworth House Office Building at 11:00 a.m. If approved by Congress, the D.C. statues placed in the Capitol would likely be of Frederick Douglass and Pierre L'Enfant. Several years ago, D.C. chose and created statues of these two men, known for their contributions to the city as well as the nation.

"I thank House Administration Chairman Robert Brady for working closely with me to get my bill on the committee's calendar," said Norton. "I have introduced this bill for many years, but now, thanks to Chairman Brady we have a realistic chance to get it through both houses. Displaying the two statues in the Capitol would honor the rich contributions District residents have made to our great city."

Two Washington area sculptors were hired to complete the Douglass and L'Enfant statues. In 2008, the statues were placed at One Judiciary Square pending passage of this bill.
