Norton's Bill to Transfer More Land to D.C. and Spur Economic Development Headed to House Floor on Wednesday
September 21, 2010
WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's (D-DC) bill, H.R. 5494, to transfer six valuable parcels of land to the District from the National Park Service (NPS) is headed to the House floor tomorrow, September 22. The parcels of land are located throughout the city and are adjacent to the Marie H. Reed Community Learning Center, the old Meyer Elementary School site, the Southwest Library site, and at the intersection of North Capitol Street and Florida Avenue.
Norton said, "These transfers are very important to the District because of the constant need for land and economic development opportunities in this city, where the federal government owns so much of the land. The NPS has little use for these parcels of land, but the District will be able to put the land to good use and spur economic development in the midst of tough economic times by developing the parcels for a variety of uses, as well as to improve livability in the District."
