Norton's New Congressional Latino Council Debuts at Friday Celebration Featuring Fun and Hispanic Achievements

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will include Mexican and Brazilian dancing, and an exhibit of paintings and artwork by Latino artists. Norton will give special recognition to Duke Ellington School of the Arts sophomore Angel Paris, who won first place in the Congresswoman's Annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students, open to students throughout the city. The highlight of the evening will be Norton's introduction of her Congressional Latino Council, comprised of prominent Latino leaders from organizations throughout the city. The event, "An Evening Celebration of Emerging Latino Leaders," will be held Friday, Oct. 16, from 5:30-7 p.m., at the GALA Hispanic Theater, located at 3333 14th Street, NW.

Norton will introduce the following members of her Congressional Latino Council: Martha Bazurto, membership services director, Latino Federation of Greater Washington; Dr. Yanira Cruz, founder and CEO, National Hispanic Council on Aging; Maria Gomez,founder and CEO,Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Care; Sonia Gutierrez,founder and CEO,Carlos Rosario International PCS; Manuel Hidalgo,executive director,Latino Economic Development Corporation; Lori Kaplan, CEO,Latin American Youth Center; Rebecca Medrano, executive director, GALA Hispanic Theatre; Rosalia Miller, founder,Latino Student Fund; Beatriz "BB" Otero, president and CEO,Centronia; Saul Solorzano, executive director,CARECEN; and Alicia Wilson, executive director,La Clinica del Pueblo.

"Our outreach to the Hispanic community has been fine as far as it goes. However, since coming to Congress, I have had a rapidly encompassing agenda effecting my Hispanic constituents," Norton said. "These distinguished members of my Latino Congressional Council will assist me in drawing a more coherent and extensive agenda to serve my Hispanic constituents, who come from many backgrounds, and have diverse needs. I am very grateful for their willingness to serve."
