Norton's Statement on Shooting in Arizona
January 8, 2011
WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) issued the following statement today regarding the tragic shooting in Tucson, AZ that critically injured Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, her staff and constituents:
"I was stunned and deeply saddened to learn of this shooting, but I am now relieved and hopeful to learn that my colleague, Gabrielle Giffords, is alive and doctors are optimistic about her recovery. My heart goes out to her husband, Captain Mark Kelly, and to the other victims. Like most members of the House, Gabby Giffords thought nothing of going out and about among the people, to be close to the people, as members of "The People's House" do almost daily and must do to do their job. Gabby courageously continued to do just that despite death threats and attacks on her office, all apparently related to her work in the House. We in the city whose residents have known too much violence from people with guns, send our best wishes for the recovery of Representative Giffords, her staff, and constituents who were victims today."
