Washington, DC-Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton D-DC) today released the following statement on the passing of former Councilmember Hilda Mason.

"In her years on the District of Columbia Council Hilda Mason made herself into an institution of sorts in this town. She stood apart from both major parties while pressing for statehood that was the mantle of her party. Hilda was always deeply involved in the great issues of social justice of her time. She was a champion of public education, relentlessly insisting that children come first. I am particularly pleased that earlier this year DC Vote honored Hilda for her efforts that they recognized as a seminal step in the long march to statehood that she championed."
